Nguyen Thi Thoa is a young Vietnamese girl that Veteran Thomas R. Joyce has brought here to the U.S. for needed surgery. She has a very bad skin condition that may or may not be caused by Agent Orange. She never left her home to go to school or even to a market, as she was called many names and terrified to go out. It wasn't until she was 10 years old that a Dr. from Hanoi had taken Thoa to what they call a Peacevillage, it is where many disabled children are for different disabilities. Thoa felt that she fit in and this is where Tom Joyce met her. She asked if he could fix her face.

Tom told of the situation to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, and a Dr. Christopher Gordon offered to perform the surgery for Thoa and he would waive his fees. However the Hospital is charging for their part. Thoa, has had her first of 2 or more surgery's which you can see by the attached photo's. Her skin is covered with black blotches. The next surgery , the doctor hopes to remove the skin from her neck and her arms.

Thoa has returned home November 2001 and her surgery was a success.
